The Gabriola Historical & Museum Society

The Museum is a unique place to provide valuable insight into our ancestors and resources in a fascinating range of subjects. It tells the stories of the people who built and are building this island and its First Nations legacy. We also celebrate and preserve our diverse cultural heritage, and help foster mutual understanding, cooperation and peace amongst the peoples of this Island.

The Gabriola Historical Museum Society mission:

Is to foster and develop the interests of Gabriola residents, visitors and other institutions in the island's cultural and natural history. To tell the story of Gabriola island's geology, geography, flora, fauna and marine environment and life through exhibits, lectures or other means with emphasis on the way which the Coast Salish people, Euraopean explorers, post contact pioneers, and recent inhabitants have related to its natural setting and earlier history.

This is a non-profit volunteer-run community museum.

Our AGM and Election of Officers
will be held at the
ROXY on Feb. 5, 2011 (Sat.) from 2 pm to 4 pm.

On September 18th the Gabriola Museum will have been open for 15 years. This is because the people of Gabriola have given their time and money to support the museum. Now, however, we are in need of volunteers to support us in the everyday running of an internationally recognized museum. An eminent professor from Europe as well as visitors from all over North America have come to view our special history, which is Gabriola Island.

On this 15th anniversary, we the Board of the Gabriola Historical and Museum Society request your help in maintaining the museum for the future.

If you love to live on Gabriola and enjoy its culture please support is tax request.

From the Sounder Dec 20 (quote)

Museum Funding

Contrary to what was reported in last week's Sounder, I would not consider a petition of 30 signatures of support of tax funding for the Museum adequate, I asked that a petition of over 300 signatures be collected as a show of support for funding the Museum through RDN taxes. The Museum Board has lowered the request to $12,000 a year which translates into a tax increase of $1 on $100,000 of assesed value. They intend to host an open house to provide information and answer questions. To date, no decision has been made to move forward with a request to the RDN Board for funding.
